Does the grey title really matter? As long as we discern who gets it like i said in the staff board, it still remains a way to honor long service to the site, and it's not forced upon anyone.
like i said before;

On the final issue, of retired staff; i really don't see the reason why a few select people, _____ and _____ included, are considered "retired staff". If you retire, that means that you have left some sort of legacy behind, a tangible way for people to say that you did something. I see the retired staff position as more of what would be the equivalent of emeritus status in a college or university; retired and no longer expected to fulfill obligations, but enjoying some privileges of a staff member, along with being respected enough to toss their two cents into a thread. For this matter i say that the retired position should be given out less than it currently is, and for a reward to staff members that didn't cut it, either make a new user group, or just give them a free gold membership.
