Default Independent game development tools

Starting to develop your own games can be a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, if you're new at it, there are some free or moderately cheap software suites that can help get you started.
  • The Torque Engine
Torque is a pretty decent pre-made game engine that will allow you to build your own game "from scratch" with some easy to use tools for level design. There are other components on the Torque website that can help you create other parts of your game.
  • RPG Maker
While using an engine that's a bit outdated, there's no denying that RPG Maker has quite the user base of software developers. It's unmatched ease of use for cut-and-pasting games together attracts a lot of new game developers. If you've never authored your own game or been a part of a team that did, this would be an excellent place to start.
  • 3D Game Studio
My personal favorite, Contiec has put together a fabulous 3D game engine that can be purchased for a nominal fee with no royalties and the ability to alter the source however you wish. The software has a very large group of supporters and quite a number of professional quality titles have been produced using this engine. The website also includes a ton of documentation, free material, and other components to help you create your game.

If you know of other game production suites, feel free to post them!

o.O Sounds awesome. Great idea for a new forum on here.

I'd love to give game development a try, but I will almost definitely fail. Things like this take a lot of time and patience, I'm sure.

They do, but if you're passionate about it, you'll find that you stick with it even when it gets tedious.

game maker a pretty good game engine that can be expanded with dlls. First thing I started with when I started programing. Good to get yourself started and to learn some concepts before moving onto more complex things.

You could also search for BlitzBasic or DarkBasic, they are specialized on gamedev. But I don't know how good they are, as I never used them.

You have only linked to RMVX, which is only one out of four RPG makers that I know of...
Theres is RPG maker 95, RPG maker 2003, RPG maker XP, and then RPG maker VX. People have different preferences. RMVX and RMXP require scripting for certain features, while I think that RM2k3 is best cause it has no scripting. RMXP and RMVX have better graphics, but cost money. If ya wanna find any, just google it.
