I'm planning to get a new computer, and I just have a few CPU questions that I just couldn't find a clear answer to. As most of you are aware, there are Dual core systems that are developed by Intel and AMD, and I want a comparison between Dual Core vs. Single Core, and also Intel vs. AMD, as well as an answer to this question.
Q:If you have 2.0Ghz Dual Core and a 4.0Ghz Single Core, are the speeds the same? If not, then what's the speed of 2.0Ghz Duo in a single core? Now, just for the your information, I'm considering a laptop also, and I know that soon Intel is going to release (already did in Asia) third Centrino platform: Kapa, which has both Duo and Single. Is it better to get Duo or Single for laptops?

2. No, the second core will give you a 70% performance boost in MULTITHREADED applications. In normal applications, it will act like one 2.0GHz proc. Read over at www.tomshardware.com the Ultimate CPU charts.

With an OS that supports multiple processors you can also designate a particular program to run a CPU (0) or CPU (1), so basically you can rip a CD on one core, and play Source on another.
AMD is the way to go for desktops, Intel is the way to go for servers.

Comrade has it down ****ing pat. Intel's server processors are more stable whereas AMD's are better for client applications and multiprocessing. Also is true for applications servers, being as hyperthreading doesn't work well over terminal services.

I'm going to laugh my ass off, if you get an dualcore Intel. Basically what Intel has masterfully done is, shove 2 dyes on 1. In order for it to function as a true dualcore, it has to talk from one cpu>motherboard>cpu, which will make your processor's latency monsterously grotesque. AMD on the other hand, has done this correctly. The CPU's can talk to each other, with no need from a motherboard controller, offering you better speeds, and low latencies. And has probably some of the lowest lat scores I have ever seen.
You will only notice your dualcores superior performance on multithreaded application and/or games. Current games (besides a couple) do not contain mutilthread coding, therefore it can only operation through it's single thread, and single core. However, applications such as Photoshop and file transfering and stuff, you can take full advantage of this awesome features. |
