I was thinking of getting one.
It's a blatant ripoff because of the price and the strings that come attached with it. There are much better alternatives for the same price or cheaper. If you feel like reading for 5 minutes before dishing out $500 + dollars, here are some links you should check out.

The cost isnt an issue for me, as I can get it cheap (plus im rich). The things I like about the iPhone are:
*Touchscreen
*Internet Browsing (here in the UK i would get free web browsing anywhere in the UK)
*GPS thing (i wouldnt use it much but i think its nifty)
*iPod built in
thats actually quite a ****ty list, but thats all i really need. however looking at whats bad:
*Crappy 2MP camera, cannot record video
*no mms (i have never used mms even on my previous phone, but its stupid to not have it on the iphone)
*no mp3 as ringtone (can't this be hacked?)
*non removable battery, low life after heavy usage
thats really the only problems that i have with it.. i think i can live without those. i mean its still way better then my samsung E900, it does everything it can do plus a little bit more (plus i would pay exactly the same per month as i already do).
That's a nice list there. You could get something that does all of that for cheaper. Also OS on it takes about a gig so you're getting a 7gig ipod and that's if you only put music on it. Pretty sh*t if you ask me for $599. For rich people like you money isn't an issue but still, no need to donate it to Apple. Get yourself something more powerful for that money.

Could you recommend anything that actually looks like a phone? I looked at the Nokia N800 and it is so ****ing ugly i would be embarassed to carry that around with me lol.
The idea of having an mp3 player builtin to a phone sounds kind of crappy to me, especially when you can't have a spare battery with it. I can imagine your battery dying when you need it the most....

The iPhone is a piece of ****, and so is your face.
In all seriousness, if you have alot to spend on a phone, I don't think the iphone is really that bad of a choice, especially if you don't care about the cons you listed.
Also, mad. Alot of people pay extra for apple products because of the way they are designed (artistically) They are willing to pay extra for something that is more esthetically pleasing. Just look at any apple product and you can see that they spend much more time on the looks of their products than many other electronics companies do.

Buy a better device, then spend some money and buy some furniture from ikea if you're in it for the aesthetics.
How the f*ck isn't the iPhone a bad choice for that money? What are you getting for that money? I'd rather spend 600 and get 2 of the iPhone competitors. Then I can be like, one's for my boys and ones for the ladies or some stupid sh*t like that.

What the iPhone does for me is make me cry that it's the first phone to actually have a pleasing interface. The joke that Verizon uses is a piece of ****, and the fact that Apple has to come in to the game in order to get something half decent is ridiculous.
Even after the iPhone, knockoff phones can't get it half as right. Yeah, it takes a lot of development. Well, I'm sorry to alert you phone companies, that is what it takes to make a phone not suck.

Also, I have 30gb ipod anyway, so i'd only put some MASSIVE CHOONZ!! on it.
im going to get one anyway, im not even with verizon (thank god, ive heard so many bad things about it), I can get one for £200 which is $400. Considering the phone I have now costs £90 (i got it free on contract), its not even that much more.
When there is a phone that can equal or better the iPhone, I will get one. This phone would have to have all of the following qualities - not some, ALL.
1) dimensions not exceeding the dimensions of the iPhone
2) a camera of equal or better quality
3) external speakers
4) mp3 capability with equal or greater storage
5) mobile internet browsing of comparable or better quality
6) touchscreen with equal or greater size and equal or better image quality
7) ability to detect change in orientation and rotate screen display
8) screen to overall phone size ratio equal to or better than that of the iPhone
Etc etc etc...
Until then the iPhone is the champ.
