The quotation is actually a misquote form the Bible. The original quote from the Bible is actually, 'The love of money is the root of all evil'. The original quotation probably means a love of money, or the carving for money - to the exclusion of everything else, or as the chief motivation in life - is evil. This may be acceptable, since people who love money are as likely to be those who have enough of it, as those who do not have enough of it. Nevertheless, the question will be taken as it literally means, weather it is agreeable that money is the root of all evil.
The word money obviously means wealth - material wealth, like property, jewelery, currency notes and so on. Strictly speaking, money as currency is a unit of measure, like inches, kilometers, hours and seconds and milligrams. It does not seem sensible to label a unit of how much wealth a person has as evil. It is what money represents, wealth, that is accused of being the root cause of all evil. There cannot be any truth to the statement. Above everything, in anything, it is the use that one makes of it that decides its value - weather good or evil. Money cannot be called evil because people have used it for evil or because people have done evil for money. What people do for money or with money is the fault of the people doing it and has nothing to do with money itself. To draw a parallel, many crimes have been committed because of Love. Can love then be labeled as evil because so many lives are badly affected by it? If we stop philosophing and see what evil money has brought about, we will count a lot of it indeed. Men have destroyed, betrayed and even killed for money and with money. But then again, if we go on looking for what evil money has done, and can do, we will find many. Pausing and asking about what good money has done will uncover a whole new list. Money has fed the poor, it has clothed the naked, it has educated men and women, built homes, helped millions and so on. In fact, what many actually come about is that we may turn around and say that money is the root of all good! Frankly, money is nether good nor bad but, like many other things in this beautiful world, neutral. It is the use to what it is put that decides weather it is good or evil. If someone points to a crime, like robbery, theft or breach of trust, and say that it is caused by money, it would be ridiculous indeed. If a man robs the bank, it is not because of money but because of the lack of it. It is because the man is in a condition of not having money, or not having enough of it, that he commits the robbery - in order to have it. If we say that money cause him to rob, it is inaccurate because it is the lack of money that causes him to turn to crime. I tis generally uncommon to see people who have enough money turning to crime to get more of it. Surely, if statistics are gathered on the subject , we will be led to conclude that it is the lack of money that has caused more crimes than the possession of it. So perhaps the quotation in the question should be revised to read ad : 'the lack of mohey is the root of all evil'. The statement, and other statements like it, are negative and was not arrived at after much thinking. Perhaps, it was said in some particular ontext or contexts and because it was nice to say - and probably because it showed the speaker as being superior to the world - and so has been seized and popularized as being a great thing to say. It is empty and stripped to nothing if analysed. It was probably popularized by people who were poor and were too lazy to make themselves rich, or by those who were rich and did not want others to climb to their levels. Seen from most aspects, the statement is a great lie and should henceforth be banised from use. |

Did you just write this essay to share with us for no reason? Or is that post lacking a citation? I'm to lazy to check and find out for myself.

Should have been posted in the SD forum where the start of this topic began? Why make another thread for?

I'm not sure why you decided to post it here though, Akazukin. Suppose you've done stranger things. Nonetheless, kudos; that was well said for the most part. |

now if only there was a subforum for shortstories/longstories/essays.
hinthint interesting perspective wealth drives human existance, or so i beleive. you work hard to get somthing in return, everything you do, you do to get somthing in return. doing something pointlessly you do for a reason also, for a laugh, to annoy somone, to take up time. wealth can have different meanings, physical things such as a house or a dollar, or more of a mental thing, like laughs, revenge, amusment of some sort. id say, "money is the root of all" |
