Default P2P researchers: use a blocklist or you will be tracked... 100% of the time

This isn't a new article by any means, but I thought it'd be worthy of posting.

Quote:
The old cliché "You're not paranoid if they really are out to get you" turns out to apply quite nicely to the world of P2P file-sharing. A trio of intrepid researchers from the University of California-Riverside decided to see just how often a P2P user might be tracked by content owners. Their startling conclusion: "naive" users will exchange data with such "fake users" 100 percent of the time.

I've never used any p2p blocking technology and I stay mostly on private trackers. I've also never gotten a letter about piracy.

Lol, how naive. Just because there isn't some cop showing up at your door immediately after you click download doesn't mean there aren't people building cases, and picking offenders. Just the fact they can get your username and IP address scares me. They can cross reference your IP with seeders listed on a torrent site, and eventually link your IP to your username.

I'd argue that public sites are more safe than private sites, assuming the owner isn't apt to hand over his server logs because of the very same reason I listed above. Anonymity in huge numbers. Anyways, nice job getting tracked. I hope you don't end up in court.

I see your point gp. What I meant by "never having used p2p blocking technology" was that I'd never seen fit to use any kind of third party app. I do however keep a regularly updated ipfilter.dat in my utorrent with all of the current anti-p2p ips inside.
Do you use anything other than that?

download peerguardian 2, use all their default lists, and also add all of these block lists

Very nice list pinner. I was already using quite a few of the bluetack ones, but I'm gonna set the rest of them up with bluetack's blocklist manager right away. Great bt posts as usual dude.
