How to spice up your desktop

Hey guys, while looking over the "Post your desktop" thread, I noticed some really awesome designs. I was just curious, what programs or web resources do you use to make toolbars, clocks, different windows themes, desktop backgrounds, etc... I experimented with Windowblinds 4.5 for a bit, but I didn't really like it.

In particular, I really liked Artanix, Jakor, and Gamepin's desktops. Gamepin, how did you get those menu's at the top of your desktop?

Alot of those things u add to your desktop can although look nice but make your computer run slower because it requires more memory.

yeah thats true thats why i never change crap to my desktop normally i end up fukn my pc xD

OK I will answer that. Everything you do to your desktop that looks cool will take up more memory than if you have a straight blue screen whit a bunch of quick launch icons. Even having a crap load of desktop icons takes up memory. If you are limited on the amount of memory you have (like me) the best thing to do is have almost no desktop icons (use quick launch they are better anyway), remove all of the EFFECTS from the menues (no shadows, fading, or any other bells and whistles) just have a nice clean environment. That is why you notice on my desktop I have no icons just a start bar on the left with a bunch of quick launch icons.

By the way, anyone know how to get my start button to the bottom of my left stack? Not move the whole bar to the bottom just the start button itself.

i got the thingy and ran it and customized all my crap, then checked task manager for memory...only 652 k of memory used by it (hl.exe was using like 50000 k :P so it only uses a very small amount...

can get a 2ghz+ dell for a few hundred.
even for a high school kid. that's part time 4 hours a day for a few weeks. can go 5 finger some ram and you're set. it's the 21st century ffs.. UPGRADE!

And then you grow up have a couple of kids and realize that there are other things more important than a super 1337 computer. You sure as hell do not want to be stupid and try for some free ram. It's the 21st century moron there are cameras.
