Crazy new anti-drug laws: BIG mandatory minimums and more

Republican Congressman James Sensenbrenner has launched his next assault on freedom. The full House Judiciary Committee is set to vote as early as next week on H.R. 1528, which creates a new group of mandatory miniumum penalties for non-violent drug offenses, including a five year penalty for passing a joint to someone who's been in drug treatment.

That means just handing someone a joint who has been in treatment before can get you automatic 5 years minimum in prison, probably more. This is your wonderful republican party hard at work ingoring terrorism and locking up all those evil drug users instead.

I think it's a great idea. We put people away for hurting others... and contributing to a drug addiction is a form of harm.

Well I consider myself a republican, and I am evil but for totaly different reasons. As for the drugs, anything that kills as many brain cells as drugs do should be banned and come with harsh penalties. Before some of you "Pot doesn't do any harm" people start flaming me let me ask you a question. Is a drug that messes your mind up so much that you ask your 10 yo son if he want's a hit a good thing to have around? Ya I know most of you guys that don't have kids yet will probably not care but when you get older and have kids, ask yourself if you would realy want to polute and ruin that which will be your legacy when you are gone. How would you like to look 20 years down the road and wonder why it is your child is in rehab or dead? Maybe then you would want stiffer penalties put in place.

Besides all of that if you are so weak minded that you need drugs to escape from your problems then you need to get more help than rehab. You need to find help in the for of someone to talk to or counseling. As for the "HIGH" I am pretty sure that I have had a hell of alot better Highs jumping out of airplanes and rappelling out of helicopters than those artificial drugs can give.

Well there is my 2 cents. I am sure some of you are going to attempt to flame the hell out of me for this but before you start your flame you should sit back and realy think about the whole situation. Not just your piece of it.

I agree with you, I dont do drugs at all anyway. Making it legal or not, the same number of people are going to be smoking it either way. So who cares.

Who the hell really does drugs to escape their problems or because of peer pressure? That is the stupid 80s propaganda talking. You must have watched too much GI Joe and McGuyver growing up. I smoke pot to get high, not because I need to and not because I feel pressured to, because I want to. To me its like eating a good candy bar, drinking a nice soda or having a good meal. I also maintain a 3.90 GPA at my college with a double major in poli. sci and economics and I already got accepted into Berkeley, Hastings, GWU and Columbia law schools, do don't tell me it makes you stupid or affects memory. Man, how long until all this mindless propaganda dies off and people realize there is no current scientific knowledge about neurochemistry right now? Ever watch those prozac or zoloft commercials? Listen to the disclaimer at the end, they don't know if those chemicals exist, they don't know how the brain works at all, it's all purely theoretical.

I was speaking purely from watching people when I grew up and it did quite a job of messing up their minds. Congratulations on not being one of the statistics. However it is also proven that for many people Pot is a stepping stone on the road to harder drugs. And being college eduacted as you are you can not tell me that the harder drugs do not do damage to the brain.

And what is so wrong with GI Joe and McGuyver I loved both of those shows when you were still wetting your pants. :D

How old are you? I am 23. Personally, I thought GI Joe was poorly animated CRAP, they did have one cool set of episodes though when they were fighting the "drug lord." Man that episode was hilarious, they were assaulting his base with tanks and jets and stuff, and he was firing back rockets full of drugs at them, very funny. McGuyver was kind of cool until you realized every time he hit someone he'd fall over and hurt his own hand.

I am 32 so at the time that was one of the better done animations. Personaly one of the all time greatest cartoons was Starblazers but then again I am a dinasaur. Think I might have to start a thread Titled "Am I the grandpa of the group?". Maybe later, have to get to work.
