Looking for...

I'm looking for a game to play recreationally. I don't want to invest a lot of time into it, so no adventure, role playing etc. It should be easy to play and learn. It should have cool graphics. I have quite a new computer, but it shouldn't be the latest **** with uber hardware requirements.

Well basically what the Jew said above. (COD4/CSS/BF2)

You didn't really say if you want a singleplayer, or multiplayer game. When I'm just looking to kill time I get on CSS and play some Zombie Mod/Death Match.

It can be multiplayer but it needs to be uncomplicated, but single player is also fine.
(I'm not looking to buy the game btw)

Those were Call of Duty 4, Counter Strike: Source, and Battlefield 2 respectively.

Mass Effect is a nice, quite simple, insultingly easy RPG. Crysis, at least the first half, is a lots of fun and has plenty of DX10 gimmicks. Depending on what you mean by "cool graphics" I highly recommend Psychonauts.

Now if you don't know what Zombie Mod is... it works like this. One person turns into a zombie and has to go stab the rest of the players, when you get stabbed you also turn into a zombie. Which means players have to stick together and hide. You can also build a barricade.

Since you don't care if it is singleplayer/multiplayer, I don't really see why you don't give RPGs a chance. Spending 12 hours beating Half-Life 2, or 12 Hours beating Fable: TLC is the same amount of time. In short:

Multiplayer:
FPS:Call of Duty 4, Counter-Strike: Source, Battlefield 2, Halo: Combat Evolved, Team Fortress 2

Singleplayer:
FPS: Half-Life 2 + Episode 1 & 2, Portal, Crysis, Tribes: Vengeance
TPS/RPG: Mass Effect, Vampire: The Masequerade Bloodlines
RPG: Fable TLC (My all-time favorite game. Give RPGs a chance. )

Starcraft?

Call Of Duty 4 (COD4) is good online and single player (since you don't want to pay you can just torrent a copy and play single player)
GTA4 for PC (Don't know if its out or when it would be coming out) is another fun game

Yeah, I'm sure thats what they want. Hacks being made for the game before it's even released.

And maybe even try out Lost Planet. You can download a demo of it (and alot of other games) over stream. If you like it, torrent it, if you don't want to pay.

He's got something here. If you're willing to take the time to get some of the player-made mods that make it actually challenging it's one of the best RPGs around, but even right out of the box its fairly addictive and requires zero investment.
