The best spyware detector/remover for XP users is the one microsoft provides itself for free to anyone who has a windows serial key.

heres how it goes at the school system i work for.. if you have a computer runnin 95, 98 or anything that came before xp we put spybot S&D on it. WinXP however gets the microsoft beta. However on top of this we use a program called sophos wich is supposed to be a good antivirus program for large networks....(so we are told) but i dont like it cause it slows down the start up time greatly.
on my computer i use spybot s&d, avg, and occasionally ad-aware se. X-cleaner, i think thats the name. but, it is a good program for cleaning registry lines that are broke although it only fixes 30 at a time and then only 3 after that cause of the trial version crap but i dont have much of a problem with my registry anyway. Actually ms antispyware is a good one. Before ms bought out giant it was one of the best paid programs you could get. Ms bought them out and put their name on it, took away win9x support and the removing tracking cookies and gave it away. I think they took the tracking cookies out because of all the tracking cookies ms uses groups, chat, games, online buying etc... Before you buy anything I would like at http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
http://spywarewarrior.com/index.php I would check out wilderssecurity Privacy Software and Issues section. Here is a site with more info and links http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm. I would install and keep adaware and spybot installed and updated. I would not suggest you go and just get one product and leave off them. I would suggest you get all the 3 free ones, adaware, spybot and ms antispyware(now it is called Windows Defender). |

Ok, here's what I have (all free too):
Mozilla Firefox Spybot - Search & Destroy Ad-Aware SE Personal SpywareBlaster CWShredder avast! Antivirus SpywareBlaster doesn't remove spyware, it just provides real-time protection against most spyware threats. Be sure to enable the real-time protection in Spybot as well. Update at least monthly and you should be fine. I rarely even scan for spyware anymore because I never get it. Sometimes I go months in between scans and the MOST I get is a tracking cookie or two. As for Firefox, that's a no-brainer. Avast provides great real-time protection against malware, and even has a transparent proxy that acts as a web scanner. Finally, people need to practice safe browsing (AKA don't go to Cr4x and SeRiAlZ sites). |
