I use Ad-Aware SE Plus, Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware beta 2 (seems to be good at detecting keyloggers), Bazooka Scanner (scans take less than 5 seconds, and it is free), cwshredder, aVAST!, and Zonealarm Internet Security Suite.

The reason why Microsoft Antispyware was so awesome, is because Microsoft bought GIANT (one of the top antispyware businesses), and just slapped MS on it. Microsoft Defender is completely different, and a heap of garbage, don't download it.

If you aren't savvy enough to get a copy of LimeWire Pro for free (so easy its a joke), there is always FrostWire. FrostWire is a freeware fork of LimeWire that is malware free. Most of you are probably not aware that the latest free and pro versions of LimeWire have an optional (for the moment at least) DRM filter that is built in. As soon as LimeWire makes this filter permanent, FrostWire will probably be the most similar alternative.

Bittorent blows all other usable p2p tech out of the water anyways. The key thing about bittorent is you have to find yourself a good community. Obviously, the best ones out there are closed and you need invites. Direct/internal distribution access (pre-release 0day) is actually the quickest and best way to get anything, but this isn't available to the general public. After internal release everything ends up in couriers hands who trade the latest stuff for credits to get more warez and then it filters down into public realm usually like this:
usenet => public ftp => irc => p2p =X=> http

A lot of stuff used to never make it to web distribution but thanks to sites like rapidshare.de that is changing. Some groups are even moving towards eliminating the couriers from the picture and using bittorent and unified/multi-group ftp exclusively. Things sure have changed since the days of the BBS.... but I believe this may be the first step towards the public getting more 'direct' scene access again.

The Chinese, followed by the Russians are for the most part prolific spreaders of warez ( and viruses of all kinds) so if you dig in at one of the communities(forums) that are accepting of foreigners you may eventually find yourself with access(usually throttled/limited) to some of their ftps. That is probably the closest the general public is going to get to scene level access for a while.

To be honest, the true scene usually isn't interested in whats on your computer unless you work in the entertainment/software industry, are privy to the upper echelons of the corporate world, or work for the government of any of the industrialized countries. The ones you have to worry about are the grifters, thieves and computer terrorists that really don't care who you are. What people should be focusing on are preventive technologies and behaviors that will protect you from them (and optionally your own government/malware slimebags).

Heh. Only if you use the free version and don't realize LimeWire (and gnutella in general) is good for only porn and music. Ya, I did get off topic a bit, but I wanted to address the p2p thing as well.

And thats just the basic list! I prefer much tighter security and more control but I understand that most people don't enjoy tweaking and configuring on a regular basis. Also, if you have McAfee or Norton(non-corporate version), I would ditch them for something more stable/accurate such as Kaspersky.

Keep your internet disconnected except when using, avoids alot of grief. And by disconnected, I mean unplug the cable modem, or uninstall your ethernet card and reinstall when needed.

Apparently Ad-Aware doesn't work all that well, although it seems to pick up most things :\ I personally use S&D and it works quite effectively
