JLTucker's Guide to Port Forwarding with a LinkSys Router

This is a quick tutorial on forwarding ports with a Linksys router. I suggest you get Azuerus because we will be using that to test whether or not the port forwarding was done correctly.

01. Go to Start >> Run. Type "cmd".

02. Type "ipconfig"

03. Write down your ip address and your default gateway.

04. Open up a browser and type the default gateway into the address bar

05. You will be prompted to enter a username and password. If you haven't changed the username and password, enter "admin" for the username and "admin" for the password.

06. What you see after you input the username and password depends on what model your LinkSys router is. Here's what most newer models look like:

07. Now, on this page, make sure your "Local DHCP Seerver" is enabled and that the "Local IP Address" is your default gateway. Now find where it says "Start IP Address". In the blank box, put the last 3 digits of your IP address.

Note: Your default gateway may not be the same as in the picture above.

08. Now click on "Applications and Gaming".

The "Applications and Gaming" page should by default display the "Port Range Forwarding".

09. Go to http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

10. Choose a port that is unassigned. If you are using Azureus, choose an unassigned port within the range 49152 - 65535. I chose 11322.

11. Go back to the "Applications and Gaming" page.

12. Enter t he necessary information. If you are only forwarding one port, make the start port range and the end port range the same port number. Under "Protocol", select Both, and under "IP Address", enter the last 3 digits of your IP address. And make sure the "Enable" box is checked. Scroll down and choose "Save Settings".

13. Now we test whether or not we forwarded the port correctly. Open up Azureus and open a torrent to start downloading. Make sure you are downloading.

14. Go to Tools >> NAT/Firewall Test

15. The following should pop up:

16. Enter the port you forwarded into the box next to "Incoming TCP Listen Port". Then Click "Test"

17. If you did it correctly, the following should be displayed:

If you did it incorrectly, it will say that the test Failed.

There we have it. You have forwarded a port!!!

Probably. Just know what port you need to forward. If you follow my instructions carefully, you will not need to test it.

It works on anything and everything. Make sure you have the right range of ports, and it will work.
