Default Yet another problem with my computer

I again have a problem with my computer. I am on the ****ty one in the basement right now because the main one doesn't work. I have windows XP SP2 and Norton Systemworks. A Systemworks message came up and asked me if I wanted to run live-update to get updates and stuff. So I said yes and after everything was done, it told me to restart the computer, so I did. When i started it back up, I got this nessage

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the file above"

Now I downloaded a copy of hal.dll on this computer. Should I somehow install it onto the other computer?

I had to like run a command prompt from the windows XP cd. I could'nt even start in safe mode. And then I just copied hal.dll from the cd into the system32 folder.

Put your Windows XP cd into your cd rom drive. Then when your computer boots up, right before it gives you the error message, hit F12 and it gives you a bunch of options. I'm not sure if yours will be the same, but mine said "IDE CDROM DRIVE" and I booted from that. Then the Windows XP cd menu came up and asked me if I wanted to re-install or repair, and I hit repair. Then it loads and stuff, and there should be something similar to a command prompt, like

C:\WINDOWS\ or something. Then just type
expand D:\1386\hal.dl_ C:\windows\system32\hal.dll
Where D is your CD drive and C is your hard drive. Let me know if that helped at all.

I don't know. Look at the thread that is linked above. Maybe if you download hal.dll and put it in your system32 folder.

expand x:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll

to restore original file for hardware abstraction layer from xp cd & also check boot.ini for any bad crap.

PS U have dual boot or upgrade from whatever this pc is?
