monitor help / resolution problem

I just got a new widescreen monitor.....and the only widescreen resolution I can choose is 1920x1080. It looks great up close, but it's hard to read everything far away from the screen.

So I'm stuck with using 1024x768 (so I can actually see everything), which isn't widescreen. How can I get a widescreen resolution smaller than 1920x1080?

Most of the time there are more options in the resolution menu. But I don't own a widescreen so I can't help too much

I can just change it from the preferences menu, but if that doesn't work out, go into your graphics card preferences.

Speaking of which. If you have a rather terrible graphics card it may not support such a resolution

Well, the graphics card is very terrible. Only 16MB of memory.

But it's strange that it would support 1920x1080, and then not even support 1280x768.

It doesn't support that because the aspect ratio is different. 1920x1080 is wide screen 16:9, and 1280x768 is different. (1366x768 would be 16:9).

Well, I can't change it to 1366x768 either, so I'm still screwed.

Pop up some screens of where you are changing this. Just to make sure you are doing it right.
