Nothing's more refreshing than a clean Format and OS reinstall ^__^
Doesn't really take that long, You'll probably spend more time trying to fix the issue than you would doing bla bla bla, but have you tried system restore as well? that might help too, try to go back several days before the problem happened. If I'm an idiot on the subject feel free to neg rep me ^__^ |

when a new program is installed, a restore point is automatically created, usually. And by default XP creates restore points every so often. The restore will just reset your settings and uninstall any programs you might have added since the point that you use was created, any files you have will be left over. So no need to have backed up beforehand.
