I'm definitly getting one of these Amazon.com: ASUS Eee PC 1000H 80G (10-inch Display, 1.6 GHz Intel ATOM Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony: Computers & PC Hardware
Thats so ****ing bad ass. Its not very powerful but for how small it is, thats awesome. Ima get one just for travel, dev on the go =O. It's clunky having a big laptop on a plane. And its pretty cheap, only $500

I have play with this baby before. I am the one who recommended this thing to a school Principal, and earned some commission.
It has 2 versions - Linux and Windows XP. I would recommand you the Linux version, as it's faster and the graphics look nicer, but with less power. You can do office documents with it, and the touchpad has a 2-finger zoom in/out feature. Obviously you know how to install Windows XP. I can't find any CD-ROM on it, so I have to create a bootable WinXP installation thumbdrive. Unfortunately, to use WinXP in EeePC, you will experience a slow performance. And I mean really slow. After you have start Windows, it takes like 30 seconds to load. Its VGA output will sometimes have problems when connect to a projector. It can run 3D games, but the loading is really slow as well. Photoshop have crashed a few times (not responding). For a programmer / gamer/ graphics designer, this is not what you want. For a businessman , it is. |

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Details
A solid state drive in an ultra portable PC is definitely the way to go. Also comes with Ubuntu pre-installed for a lower price

I love my EEE PC, I have the 701 4g model. The thing I love most about it is it's perfect for school, it's not some monster laptop that I'd be embarassed using in class.
I wouldn't get the 2gb version, it's not enough room. I put winxp on mine and customized everything and have like 400mb left on my 4gb hdd. |

I myself am not particularly fond of "tiny" computers, but seeing as I don't develop any software I don't really need "dev on the go." I'm assuming the 6-cell battery lasts a long time then, since the computer is smaller and should sap less power right?

I'd read up more on it. Apparently anything larger than 4gb has performance issues, and the 8.9inch one has power issues. I'm not sure about the 10 inch one, or the ATOM cpu one but yea. I'd go read some user reviews.

I was planning on getting an EEE, but then I saw a MSI laptop, I think it's the MS-1058. Specs are roughly 2x that of the EEE, and price was less than double the price (if I remember correctly) - so sure, it's more expensive, but you get far more power. Haven't made my final decision yet, so will continue to read this thread, maybe I'll go with the EEE after all
![]() EDIT: found quite a nice review - I just hope it is actually the laptop I'm thinking of. Price is R5,000 (South African Rands) compared to the cheapest EEE 700 at R2,500.

my dad and I both bought one, and I use it out in my living room most of the time, you have no idea how convenient it is to have some micro-pc on the couch. It's a ****ing amazing laptop, and what you lack in performance you make up in just epic mobility.
I use a camelback for my main school backpack and this fits in it. |
