I think those are just business battles.
They are not really out there to stop copyright. When rapidshare have lots of money, some company will sue it and demand payment, claiming about copyright. If you have a small bit-torrent site that makes no profit but is sending copyrighted materials around, which company will pay $10,000 for a lawyer to sue you? The article proves that rapidshare is making lots of money! |

I'm tired of government trying to fk with the pirates. We use rapidshare, leave us the fk alone Germany. We haven't hurt you? If they really have such a problem, they should check other avenues first... *cough* how about thepiratebay? torrentlech? feedthe.net?
This sucks for us, I hope rs makes it.

Damn, I love Rapidshare especially when I have a Premium Account. Where the hell would I get my music from?!
And it's not like the ability to download Copyrighted material from RS is such a bad thing. If the prices would be actually worth it, and supporting an artist without supporting the label behind would be legit, then obviously not that many people would download everything from there.

I buy a Year long P/A every year. I have only ever had one problem with RapidShare
I posted about it along time ago, every once in a while I will download a game or movie and all but 1-3 files go as normal ( 300-800kbs) but those last 3 files will go SO SLOW. I'm talkin 12-32 kbs. Besides that problem Rapidshare is very useful for me. |

It depends on your ISP. Alot of them have bit torrent-specific or FTP specific caps and monthly caps that lower your normal cap once you hit a certain limit, and 90% of the time you can't reach a representative that knows what they are.

RapidShare is dead, long live EvilShare.
EvilShare is much better than RS in that they don't keep track of who's downloading what. This means it's much safer to download questionable content with EvilShare than with RapidShare. @Zhuinden: If you just want to listen to music, Songza is a pretty good way to do this. Otherwise, you could use Skreemr, though I still have trouble figuring out how to download the MP3s I find on their site (you have to "save file as" on the file name, which isn't as obvious as it sounds when you actually see their interface). You realize of course that Mininova is a torrent indexing site and completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand, right?

Rapidshare, in the context of this discussion, is a method of getting warez. Mininova is also a method of getting warez.
The only difference is that Rapidshare hosts the content itself, while Mininova does not.

That is a gross over-simplification, and it saddens me that no one has called you out on this. Torrent indexes like Mininova, while mostly used to share illegal content, and not overly functionally different from a centralized data provider, is vastly different conceptually. Sites like Rapidshare are doomed in terms of pragmatic design as opposed to torrent indexes, because (as you reference in your post) centralized download sites must use their own bandwidth and file space to provide their service - whereas torrent indexes use the bandwidth and space of the people sharing the content in addition to the people downloading the content. Also, both sites have legitimate non-warez based uses (although, different legitimate uses, because they work differently and most importantly have different user bases).
In short, you are comparing apples and oranges. They are both fruit (file sharing mechanisms), but completely different.
