Here is part of Herbert Hoover's state of the union address from 1931.
To meet our domestic emergencies in credit and banking arising from the reaction to acute crisis abroad the National Credit Association was set up by the banks with resources of $500,000,000 to support sound banks against the frightened withdrawals and hoarding. It is giving aid to reopen solvent banks which have been closed. Federal officials have brought about many beneficial unions of banks and have employed other means which have prevented many bank closings. As a result of these measures the hoarding withdrawals which had risen to over $250,000,000 per week after the British crisis have substantially ceased.
Furthermore, many of our bankers, in order to prepare themselves to meet possible withdrawals, have felt compelled to call in loans, to refuse new credits, and to realize upon securities, which in turn has demoralized the markets. The paralysis has been further augmented by the steady increase in recent years of the proportion of bank assets invested in long-term securities, such as mortgages and bonds. These securities tend to lose their liquidity in depression or temporarily to fall in value so that the ability of the banks to meet the shock of sudden withdrawal is greatly lessened and the restriction of all kinds of credit is thereby increased. The continuing credit paralysis has operated to accentuate the deflation and liquidation of commodities, real estate, and securities below any reasonable basis of values.
Do you know what he did in response? He set up the Reconstruction Finance Coporation which bought over a billion a year to try and increase "market liquidity." Remember what happened shortly after?
THIS BAILOUT HAS BEEN TRIED BEFORE. WE JUST GOT ROBBED AND SHOT IN THE HEAD AT THE SAME TIME.
LMAO, I guess Brigham Young shlt those 56 kids of his own out of his ass.-Originally posted by DUI: When Mormons practiced polygamy, at the time Mormons were being killed. Because of this many of the males were killed leaving women and children without a male to take care of them. They assigned widows to a living male... ...At no time were they having sex with these extra wives, it was a way to survive and support these families. You sicken me that you would say things like you have.

They are right, the bailout did pass. This is one of the worst things that could have ever been done. Now we are going to be forced to turn to the banks and credit cards for loans and not welfare and student loans. Banks are evil when you don't pay them back and the government doesn't care if you don't pay them back. I know several people that have never paid their student loans from the government and all that happened was that they got bad credit. There were no stings attached at all. They want me to believe that our leaders just panicked and gave away 700,000,000,000 plus without any strings, that right, POWER attached? They gave the POWER to the bank.
Here is a list senators that voted no to this bill.

Lol? Are you being serious? You're using that as evidence that we are going to start going on killing rampages of civilians and making everyone worship George Bush? Considering the national guard is stationed in the states and they are usually used in the event of natural disasters and the like, is it strange to think that they would want to have exercises involving moving a lot of dirt? You really are a crazy ****er.

What the ****ing ****? Intangir is using a story about how the National Guard helped transport dirt for a school as evidence that Martial Law is being implemented? That makes no goddamned ****ing sense. I guess that high SAT score helped him deduce that.

Intangir, it is as if you are trying to discredit any legitimate conspiracy. Your spelling is honorable which does not make others trusting when it comes to believing the research you have done. You post links to conspiracy nuts sites that worship god, ask us to pray and make unfounded predictions. Now you support your evidence with national guard units helping while getting a nice workout.
I am wondering if the staff sold your account or you are trying to program people to have a mental defense against conspiracies. Whatever the deal, please realize the effect of your actions. Also, have a good reason to tell people this depressing information.

Yeah well the passing of the bill may put the markets here in America to rest, but I doubt 700 billion dollars will be able to solve a global economic meltdown. Also we will need some SERIOUS regulations that the money will not be a golden parachute for corporate fatcats on Wall Street.

Helps if you actually knew anything about the Great Depression before comparing these "Bailouts".
I'll keep it short and simple, after FDR was elected, he spend even MORE money on MORE programs to lessen the effects of the Great Depression even after the state of the union address you quoted. Also, times are different - the United States was using the doctrine of isolationism immediately after WWI, which helped to increase economic tension. As of now, we are not isolationists.
Throwing more money at this issue isn't necessarily a bad thing, but to do so irresponsibly is wrong. The problem is in the fact that we don't elect economists to solve economic problems. We elect politicians to solve economic issues. Thus the pork you see added onto this bill.
However you must learn to not make huge logical leaps - you can't assume that if you pray every day and the sun comes up every day, that if you did not pray every day, the sun would not come up every day. That's called a confounding variable.
If you need more examples, I copied and pasted this from wikipedia: Assume that a child's weight and a country's gross domestic product (GDP) rise with time. A person carrying out an experiment could measure weight and GDP, and conclude that a higher GDP causes children to gain weight, or that children's weight gain boosts the GDP. However, the confounding variable, time, was not accounted for, and is the real cause of both rises.
