I was reading bout the vpn trick to allow 2 people to play starcraft in the same game room without lagging and i decided to give it a try. I have a friend with dsl connection setup a VPN server and i have 2 computers in my own home, one will be on the local LAN and the other would be connected to my friend's computer as a VPN client. He made u/n's and p/w's to allow clients to connect but everytime I try to connect, it would say that the computer is not responding or it does a redial. Sorry, I am a noob when it comes to networking so i was wondering what I did wrong. Do I have my computer that is trying to connect to the VPN server connected to my LAN first, then disconnect it after it is connected to the server? Is it neccesary to have a domain name at my friend's VPN server? He used the one that came with windows XP and his router is a linksys. I was also wondering if we need to open any specific ports or forward any ports for the VPN connection to get through. Is it possible instead of using his ip address, I use his full computer name as the host name? And for the ip address, do I connect to his DHCP assigned IP or to his default gateway ip address? I know that is a lot of noob questions but I am really not sure what is wrong and did many trial and error runs to no success. Thanks in advanced and truly apreciate any advice given.

I am merely trying to play a game of Starcraft in the same room in my house with the same dsl line. Using the methods of a VPN server to supply one of my computer an IP address so Bnet would register both my computers on the same router as having individual IPs.

-Moved- as this does not pertain to hacking starcraft.
This is how i got mine to work. DEFINES: Server - A VPN Server which is a computer that is NOT behind your router (aka. NOT on your LAN). Client - Any computer, behind your router, attempting to connect to the VPN server. Server: 1) Create VPN server 2) Setup user/pass 3) Make sure in the settings that there is a checkmark under "USE AS DEFAULT GATEWAY" or something to that effect, this is what routes your connection through their computer, thus allowing you to use THEIR ipaddress (of their cable modem as a gateway and not your cable modem). 4) Leave connection running Client: 1) Just get online, using the router/dsl combo. 2) With that, create a "new connection" under networking via the M$ wizard. Create it as a VPN CLIENT (not server) there are tons of sites online (google) that will tell you how to do this. Btw, you must have Win2k/WinXP to act as a VPN Server for this to work (that's what I'm told). 3) Double click that "new connection" 4) It will ask you to logon, I hope you set some user/pass (server side). 5) Logon 6) goto www.myipaddress.com and verify that you AND your "partner" (LAN buddy) have different IP addresses. If you don't please check up on VPN settings and make sure that you are aquiring their IP address upon VPN logon. edit: stuck, as this might be helpful for others as well.

yes, there are three ports you must open. One for the type of encrpytion that is being applied to the VPN, i dont remember, and then two more, one for VPN tunneling and one other.
Google "VPN Ports"+firewall Post back and keep us updated

If the VPN server is behind a router, Port Mapping will need to be done on the router. Standard port usage is 1723 for PPTP. You might also need to configure your router for PPTP Passthrough. Port usage for IPSec is 500, 50-51. These ports will have to be forwarded to the VPN server's IP
i got connected to my friends computer vpn server and got promted u/n and p/w and domain, i could not get through with the u/n and p/w he created with the vpn server. i read somewhere that the client's computer must have a user name to log in to their own computer with a password similiar to one on the server's side so the packets sent through the tunnel would very the integrity of the security parameters. im going to trial and error a few more times, thanks for help, ill see if i come by any other problems with access,lat,etc. |

ok...i know what the problem is...do a tracert to 4.2.2.2 (thats just some site like google that's always on)...see where it dies...and make sure it leaves from HIS address...
if it doesnt its that "use default gateway" checkmark that is the culprit...it's what made me have some problems in the starting...that setting is client side i belive, or maybe both.. good luck, keep us posted.

Egad, you're lucky this is a sticky -.,-
Regardless of you trying to help, the fact that the last post was a FULL year ago would not only get you banned, but the problem has probably already been solved. Please check the date of the previous post before posting anything, thanks ^^;;
